food therapy

This week was International Food week at small group. So, I signed up to bring Uzbek plov.

As an aside, I've been feeling a little homesick recently, so it was fun to make food from what used to be my home. Thus the post title.

So, enough words. On with the pictorial step-by-step:

a terrible picture of me, but can you sense the excitement?

first ingredient: chopped carrots. It actually takes a while to chop them like this:

onions

garlic

rice, of course (it IS asia, after all):

a key ingredient: a package of plov seasoning, hand-delivered from the motherland itself. Thanks to sister for the gift. I think there's cumin in it. and...other stuff

recommended ingredient: a KAZAN to cook it in. This is a traditional Central Asian piece of kitchenware. Also brought over. We only had two 70-lb. bags each, but we couldn't leave the kazans.

the garlic was proving very photogenic

it's cooking!

the finished product.

after I stirred it up to distribute the meat (traditionally lamb, but I used beef)and carrots.

It was so good! I am happy. It turned out well, even though it was my first time making it on my own. I would recommend clicking the last one to enlarge and fully appreciate the beauty...

Sally, beautiful may be one word for it, but my first thought (and those of all my siblings who walked by the computer and saw it) was "are those BUGS???" who can say lived-in-a-third-world-country for a while?!!! :D

2 Questions:
What's in plov seasoning?
What are the black things in the finished product? Did I miss the insertion of black beans?

okay, it looks like I need to answer this question.

The black things are....I'm not sure. They are part of the seasoning packet, and you don't eat them. Maybe currants? does that make sense? not raisins.

I looked up the ingredients of the seasoning packet: onion, garlic, coriander, chili, curry, bay leaf. I think that's all. All I can remember right now...

I always thought the black things were some pepper-type thing. I don't think they're currants because they're very unpleasant tasting.

Still, it sounds fantastic! Nice job with the garlic photos, by the way! ;) I'm a big fan of garlic! Any chance that plov seasoning might be available at an international market in your area?
